I discovered Substack through Post.news, where so many of the writers were linking to articles they had posted on Substack. I was already a paying member of Medium, but was using Medium as a reader (didn’t post). Then
told me that Substack had added short-form Notes! I was becoming disillusioned with Post because of its ongoing tech issues, PLUS was also finding Mailchimp too unwieldy for easy newsletter posting…so decided to make the switch. What I’m finding now: SOOOOOO much great writing here on Substack, and the addition of Notes make it easier to discover and be discovered, with more opportunities for conversation.
So my short answer: I’m here as both a creator AND a reader.
What about the rest of you? Creator and/or reader? What made you sign up for Substack? Feel free to share your Substack link in your reply, and (if you are also posting) what you post about.

I've had my Substack for about a year. My newsletter is (mostly) monthly story/drawing prompts called "Somebody Write This Book!" So far it's featured arsonist turtles, ghost musicians, flower ballerinas, tooth fairies, nature-enthusiast robots, too many penguins, and a floating dog.
I'm mostly here as a creator. I post fiction that I've written and usually illustrated, mainly science fiction and fantasy, usually aimed at younger readers. I just recently found out how to add PDFs to posts, so recently I started including booklet versions of my short stories for easy printing. I've also been serializing a children's fantasy novel, Faire Exchange, about an exchange student from Faerie who becomes the new class bully. I'm only a couple chapters from the end!

And recently thought about using substack as a way to just re-broadcast my newsletter (I still use a regular newsletter program, too, because I have a series of intro emails I use to bring readers into my system). Both. Throughout my creative life, I have sought a place to not only share my thoughts and fiction, but to have a place to meet and talk with other creative and compassionate people. I found it for a brief period in the early days of Twitter, Google+, and a couple of other small social networks that flared out fast. I found Substack last year when I was looking for a new home for my serialized fiction and other posts. Now, with the advent of Notes, I feel like this is a great creative home to build community and meet people. I have had so many great conversations here.
Sounds like Substack is a great place for your serialized fiction, Charlie! I'm still figuring my way around. Wow, you have a lot of newsletters! I admire your ability to manage all these.
It has been interesting sharing my stories here. I produce an amazing amount of content since the inspiration hit me last year. It is all about riding the wave.
I just realized that more writers/creators are heading over here, so I just created a login. I have a blog on Wordpress (since 2012) that I'm not ready to give up, so I think I'll try to do some linking between Wordpress and Substack to see how things go. I never really got the knack of POST... and now I see that Twitter and Substack haven't been playing nicely in the sandbox together, so instead of being able to embed a Tweet, I had to do a screenshot. Not sure about the difference between CHAT and NOTES.
As far as I understand, Chat seems to be mainly geared toward your own subscribers....though I think non-subscribers can also post? Some people have their Chats just for Paid Subscribers, though, so it varies.
I’m both creator and reader! I read a few newsletters here, then became inspired to start writing for myself, so I did! I write Some Other Dad, which is about the challenges and issues affecting modern parents of young kids, from a dad’s perspective. I’ve met some really great people since starting a month ago - if you’re a parent then come join us :)

I’ve been thinking about a newsletter for a long time, but then several friends moved their e-newsletters from other spaces to here. So initially I was here as a reader.
But then one pointed out how blog-like Substack was, and I was intrigued by the possibility of being able to gather multiple friends’ updates in one place, stay connected to and chat with them, and possibly post my own thoughts here, so here I am as a creator as well.
I’m still figuring out my approach to my Substack, but I definitely appreciate the ability to stay cozily connected with creative friends without being inundated with the noise found everywhere else.

Then, as I was wondering about sending out a newsletter and how I would do it, I investigated further and discovered I had finally found a place where real discussions take place and writers abound. I'll admit, what clinched it was when I saw that you, Debbie, were starting a newsletter here. I've followed you off and on at different places and always enjoyed your creations. Like other comments shared here, I appreciate the interface of this platform as both a creator and reader of content (https://sadnewsletter.substack.com/). While I'm not entirely certain how to utilise Notes feature, I do enjoy its social networking aspect. As a creator and reader, what ultimately draws me to this platform is the potential for engagement with newsletter content and community. The long-form, in-depth content is definitely a plus for me.
I'm still figuring out how to use Notes, but I find it a great way to help boost other creators' Substacks, plus my own updates between newsletter mailings. I like that Notes aren't pushed into people's emails.

It feels lower stakes than a traditional newsletter too, with the options to post without notifying your list, sharing a Note, etc. it’s a nice mix of newsletter with a bit of social media feel. Wow, that's a lot of archives! I'm curious - did your subscribers get email every time an old post got imported? Or did you wait until AFTER your archives were imported before importing subscribers?
Oh no, it was so easy, all done in one step, just a few minutes... No emails sent for that. Wasn't a huge amount of content because I don't post very regularly, sometimes weeks or months between posts. That's why I don't have a piad option, only free.

Here as a reader and a creator (cross posting posts from my wordpress blog). I'm currently using both Post and Substack...but that's not sustainable in the long term. We'll see how things pan out in a month when I will need to make a tough choice.
Yay, Justus! I'm leaning heavily toward Substack over Post. Substack is what I had hoped Post would be. I still will visit Post every so often, but the ongoing tech instability, lack of community features I had hoped would be added sooner than later, and Noam's post emphasizing how Post was news FIRST and social second convinced me to give up on making Post my new home.
Yeah...it's a bummer... I think there is room for a quirky more amateur social network with micropayments to complement the more polished professional subscription ethos out here.
That's why I was hesitant to jump onto Substack even after their Motes system was launched. But Post's disinterest in getting the commenting system properly set up finally pushed me to look around.
Gotta say, Substack is real slick. If I didn't hold such strong opinion about owning my own domain & blog, I'd be contemplating total port of my blog to this platform.
I'm a little concerned about the (lack of) interaction could be discouraging for small unknown content creators (you're too accomplished to count!) ... but I've been blogging for almost 15 years in total obscurity so this is as much interaction that I can handle! But it is a different level of engagement that might not jive with the heightened expectations of someone that comes from a more flighty social media environment.
Then again...maybe that's the point. We **need** our culture to go from 288 characters back to real written essays.

I had been planning a Patreon to share behind the scenes stuff but then a friend told me to check out Substack and I liked how social and easy to use it was. From being here, i've really enjoyed all the articles I find and i end up spending tons of time just reading.
I'm loving it here on Substack, too. So easy to use, and I love how flexible the social options are. If you want to just use it for your newsletters, that's fine. If you want to do more short-form notes and community interaction, that's also fine.

I deal with anxiety myself, mainly because of my stammering issues -- that anxiety peaked when my publisher wanted me to go on my first book tour. As a child, I couldn't even say "hello" when answering the phone. But I've since become convinced that I would not be the creative person I am today were it not for my childhood stammering - Not being able to communicate easily verbally forced me to seek other ways to connect with people. I deal with anxiety myself, mainly because of my stammering issues -- that anxiety peaked when my publisher wanted me to go on my first book tour. As a child, I couldn't even say "hello" when answering the phone. But I've since become convinced that I would not be the creative person I am today were it not for my childhood stammering - Not being able to communicate easily verbally forced me to seek other ways to connect with people. Looking forward to read through your archives - I see you interviewed my friend Jarrett!
